Asa Bailey’s virtual production workshop announcement

Historical record of the RED and British Society of Cinematographers virtual production workshop announcement.

In April 2025, BAI-LEY published an announcement of a RED virtual production workshop led by Asa Bailey at Garden Studios for members of the British Society of Cinematographers. This page preserves that historical announcement. It is not an invitation to a current event.

The subject of the workshop

The announcement focused on the craft of virtual production and the relationship between a physical camera, performers and a digital environment. Its audience included cinematographers and producers considering how those methods affect a production.

The enduring question is practical: what needs to be prepared so that the image on set helps a team make the film? An environment, a camera and a display do not become a production method simply because they can be connected.

A useful way to approach a demonstration

Ask which decision the demonstration supports. It may help assess framing, light, reflections, scale or a workflow between departments. Establish what is final and what is a preview of later work.

Then consider the handover. The team needs to know what was photographed, what remains to be completed and who is responsible for the final result. Those questions are relevant beyond a single workshop or piece of equipment.

Current learning material

The open AI VFX and virtual production guide discusses how those methods can work alongside generated imagery. The capture guide explains how to prepare useful supporting material.
